Studio Spotlight: Switching it up with Switch Studios

2023-10-11

Bringing unique skills, personalities and passions to the table

Switch Studios are charged with developing premium, high-quality casino table games exclusively for Games Global.

Almost five years on from making their online table game debut, this switched-on team of specialists continues to redefine the vertical with both innovation and style – release after release.

As their latest immersive creation Immortal Romance™ Roulette spins into life on the Games Global platform, we found out more about Switch Studios’ origins and the next steps in their journey from their head of studio, Tom David.

Q. Tell us about the studio and your team.

A. Switch Studios was founded in 2017 in the town of Ipswich, UK, with a mission of shaking up the table game vertical with a new ‘best of breed’ suite of games.

Our original team had several years’ experience in both the gambling and Free to Play (F2P) gaming industries, so we were well placed to take on the challenge of creating the next generation of table games.

In 2018 we released our very first game, the simple yet elegantly titled ‘Roulette’ and following the success of this game we have released close to 40 titles, most of which centre around the still hugely popular table games vertical.

As the studio has matured, so has our mission to the point where we now produce a mixture of innovative table games, as well as diversifying into the casual games space – so we’re revisiting our roots so to speak.

Q. What makes your team different to others?

A. The Switch team is one that blends a wealth of experience with some exceptionally talented up-and-coming artists, developers and analysts from all around the globe – all of whom bring their unique set of skills, personalities and passions to the table.

Unlike run-of-the-mill table games which can be seen as very serious and elegant affairs, we’re very much a team that don’t take ourselves too seriously. We all work together in our offices based in Ipswich town centre. The atmosphere is a vibrant one and the place is very rarely quiet. We enjoy what we do and who we do it with!

Q. What are your standout titles and what made them successful?

The obvious standout title for us is Roulette, which we released in 2018. This was the very first game we produced as a new studio. The game itself forms the nucleus for everything we have built since. It’s that important for us that it even features heavily in our logo, which is a cross between a standby icon/switch and a roulette wheel!

Since then, we’ve released many titles, with the earlier ones sticking to a classic casino theme: Classic Blackjack, Premier Blackjack, American Roulette to name a few.

We’ve been constantly iterating and pushing the boundaries with our later titles, whilst embracing and leveraging other gaming verticals. You’re now seeing the likes of 9 Pots of Gold™ Roulette, which combines Gameburger Studios’ legendary Irish-themed slot with our signature roulette experience, and Classic Blackjack with Sweetheart 16™ coming through – all of which are unique to the market and are only available via Games Global.

Q. What’s your personal favourite title from your studio?

A. Roulette is my standout personal favourite!

When we first started out, we were a small start-up studio of just eight people, which meant everyone being hands-on with all aspects of the game’s creation. To have been so closely involved from conception through to go-live, then to see the game do as well as it did was a hugely rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

All that said, if I was to pick something more recent from the studio it’d have to be Terminator 2™ Roulette. Having the opportunity to work with such an iconic brand was a fantastic and unique experience, and the team have in my opinion produced something that does the T2 brand a lot of justice. I still get tingles down my spine watching the win sequence in that game!

Q. What’s your favourite part of the game development process?

A. I really enjoy the initial game design phase, where we brainstorm ideas for the next big game. It requires a lot of creative thinking and collaboration with the rest of the team to make any game happen. Seeing things we initially drew on a whiteboard or even a napkin come to life a few months later is always fantastic to experience.

Q. What trends do you see for the future of our industry?

Right now, we’re in the midst of a revolution in the iGaming (and wider gaming) sector which in my opinion is a result of technology making gaming way more accessible than it’s ever been, along with people coming of age in a world of technology they have been brought up using.

My view is we will start seeing more convergence in the online world between traditional gambling products and games in the casual space, something we’re already beginning to see with the recent emergence and popularity of crash betting and non-traditional games. All very exciting!

What can we expect from the Switch roadmap?

A. On the table games front, we’ve got some exciting new content coming out in the remainder of 2023.

Immortal Romance™ Roulette has arrived just in time for Halloween – a re-telling of the beloved original Immortal Romance™ story, but brought to life for the first time in a table game setting. The game features the famed characters from the iconic slot game alongside a Tri Rise™ bonus game, where players can win up to x2,500 their bet.

Next up, Classic Blackjack with Side bets coming in November, which will feature four unique to market side bets that our team has created in house.

We’re set to round off the year with a ‘Sweeping’ statement with the release of our brand-new low volatility roulette mechanic, Sweep & Win, which forms a part of our epic Aztec themed Roca Riches Roulette.

As we move into 2024, we will continue down the route of diversifying our table game content further, as well as releasing some never-before-seen game mechanics with our brand new Land & Win games. Watch this space!
